ANSWER

From within your user setup, over-ride the default mode line setting with the modifications you require. i.e. to change the date format to MM/DD/YY use:

set-variable $mode-line "%s%r%u%k %b %l - %h:%m %M/%D/%Y (%e) - (%f) "
